Overview

This is a mobile app that will help people identify what kind of fish they take photos of during their dive.

Introduction

My family and I have been scuba diving since 2010 and have seen over 100+ kinds of fish. Out of the 100+ fish I’ve seen underwater, I probably can only name around 15 - 20 fish without the help of Google. I also enjoy taking underwater photos of all the sea creatures I see, and that’s when I realized that I need some sort of software that will help me identify the fish that I take photos of, and that’s when I decided to create a mobile app that will help people identify fish.

My main target audience will be scuba divers who want to know what fish they are looking at or those who enjoy underwater photography and want to know what kinds of fish they are taking photos of. My secondary target audience will be people who will use it more as a fish directory rather than an app that will help them identify a specific fish. The secondary target audience are people who have not tried scuba diving yet.

This mobile app will have have two features. The first one being a fish identifier and the second feature will be a fish directory.

Elevator pitch

Fish Finder is a mobile app that will help people identify a certain kind of fish by matching a photo with the app’s database, the app’s main feature. The second feature of the app is going to be a fish directory wherein the user will be able to search for any fish from A-Z. The user will be able to identify a fish by uploading their photo of that fish, and after uploading the photo, the app will match the fish with the corresponding name.

Problem

Scuba divers are familiar with the fish they see underwater, but most of them do not know the name of the fish. For example, a scuba diver knows that a specific fish that lives in an anemone is a clownfish, but they don’t know what kind of clownfish it is since there are nearly 30 kinds of clownfish.

Solution

Fish Finder will easily help scuba divers or anyone who is interested in knowing what fish they are looking at. By simply uploading a photo of the fish, they’ll be able to find out its name and more info about the sea creature very quickly.

App overview

The mobile app will have two main features that will help people identify several kinds of fish they come across or see.

Identify a specific fish by uploading a photo to the app

• The user will be able to find out what kind of fish they took a photo of by simply uploading the photo to Fish Finder.

Fish Directory

• This will be similar to a dictionary where in users will be able to search for any fish alphabetically.

Wish list —If I were given the chance to add more features to the app, here are the following features that I would include in the future. I didn’t include these features initially because I wanted the app to be simple and let the user get the hang of the app before adding any complicated features.

Be able to identify corals

• In the future, Fish Finder will not only be able to identify several species of fish, but also several kinds of corals as well.

Community support

• Aside from the database that Fish Finder will have, people will also be able to help other people name the fish that they are trying to identify.

Create desktop version

• Aside from the mobile app, a website will be developed in the future so that users will also be able to browse through several kinds or fish and be able to upload their photos for identification using a desktop computer.

Research

There are approximately 33,600 kinds of species, but that is just an estimate. Until now, there’s no exact count of how many species there are since even up to this day, new species of fish are still being discovered by scientists.

Logo exploration

I was choosing between two differents colors of the fish. Initially, my logo was only a fish without a magnifying glass, but I decided to add a magnifying glass to the logo so that in a glance, the user will know what the app is for. I also decided to add the magnifying glass to differentiate my app from the other apps in the App Store.
